Dean Corwin Hinders, 84, lifelong athlete and coach

Dean Corwin Hinders, 84, died peacefully, surrounded by family Wednesday, May 29, 2019, in Williamsburg. Born May 6, 1935, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dean was married to his high-school sweetheart, Denise Green Hinders, for almost 63 years.

Dean earned a B.A. from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he played varsity basketball, as well as a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Oregon.

Dean taught and coached junior high school for eight years and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, but he spent most of his career at the South Dakota State Penitentiary, where he was associate warden of programs.

More than 20 years ago, Dean and Denny retired to Williamsburg, four blocks from their grandchildren. Gramps was an athlete, coach and sports fan his whole life. He was very active here in Williamsburg playing golf, racquetball, pickleball and bridge, and, of course, enthusiastically cheering on grandchildren. He was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Scott and Mark Hinders, both of Williamsburg, and their wives, Anne Courtney Hinders and Terry Rice Hinders; as well as three grandchildren, Max Hinders (27) of Chicago, Illinois, Denai Courtney (24) of Richmond and Dorothy Hinders (24) of Arlington.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 3, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church. A reception will follow services.
