Lawrence Samual “Moose” Conner, 85, died peacefully at his home Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019. He was born June 15, 1933, in Streator, Illinois, to Marie and Wayne Conner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Barbara; son, Joseph; as well as his five siblings, James Conner, Isabel Sopher, Rosemary Walling, Richard Conner and Colleen Yacko.
He is survived by his daughters, Shay (Tommy) Samuel, Donna (Johnny) Thompson, Beth (Linwood) Otey, Nancy (Dale) Smith and Deborah (Sean) Duff; six grandchildren, Chea Lemus, Heather Jones, Adam Helms, James Wallace, Chris Wallace and Avalon Davis; and five great-grandchildren.
He worked several jobs over his lifetime including farming, tile work and as a machine operator at Owens-Illinois, where he retired. He and Barbara transferred to Virginia in 1979 to help open the Owens plant in Toano, where he also served many years as the union president. After his retirement from Owens, he worked at Colonial Williamsburg for 12 years, retiring in 2013.
Moose loved to tell stories, especially of his younger days. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army until 1955 when he was honorably discharged and was a huge supporter of our veterans. He also enjoyed old cars, motorcycles, reminiscing about time spent in Alaska while stationed in the Army, and spending time with family and friends. He and Barbara were startup members of St. Olaf church, where he attended every Saturday evening Mass.
A service is being held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Olaf Catholic Church, Norge.
