John A. “Johnny” Cox, 83, of Williamsburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, surrounded by his children.

He was born Sept. 25, 1934, in Doncaster, England. In 1949, he came to the USA and resided in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957. In 1958, he married his beloved wife of 38 years, Charlotte St. Clair Cox, who preceded him in death in 1996. John worked in the Machinery Department at the Newport News Shipyard for 11 years before relocating to Pittsburgh in 1969. He retired as a senior design engineer from Bayer Corp. after 24 years and returned to Virginia in 1996.

He is survived by his sons, John A. Cox Jr. and James R. Cox; daughter, Julie Cox Scott; and son-in-law, Nelson Scott; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; cousin, Jacqui of Boulder, Colorado; and dear friend, Linda.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel. Graveside services will be conducted by Pastor Dennis Worsham at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at Peninsula Memorial Park.
