Sarah Whittington Hayes Armistead, 99, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 28, 2018. She was born July 8, 1918, to the late John Whittington Hayes and Sallie Cox Hayes in Newport News, Va.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Robert Travis Armistead; and daughter, Sallie Armistead Wilson.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert Travis Armistead Jr., and his wife, Kay; daughter, Mary Armistead Hogge, and her husband, Ralph; grandchildren, Elizabeth Ware Armistead, and Judith Armistead Reeves, and her husband, Kevin; and great-grandchildren, Katherine and Emily Reeves.
Sarah graduated from Longwood College and pursued a career in education as a teacher. She was a member of Bruton Parish Church and a devoted wife and mother.
A graveside service will take place at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 31, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, or a charity of your choice.
