John Andrew Van Bergen, 19, beloved son, brother and friend, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, in Richmond, Va. A lifelong resident of Williamsburg, John attended the VCU School of the Arts with a focus on a career in independent film and cinema distribution.
His knowledge of independent and foreign film genres, production distribution and the industry was extensive. One of his most cherished jobs was a senior internship at the Kimball Theatre where he worked on a portfolio of foreign and independent film cataloguing and research. It was one of his favorite venues and accomplishments during his high school career.
John was also a gifted photographer and recipient of a merit scholarship award to pursue his interest in the arts. He also shared a deep passion for music and emergent independent artists. A high honors high school scholar, John’s greatest joy was spent discussing film, music and social issues and spending time with his three puppies, family and many friends. Voted “most likely to travel the world,” John’s creative spirit and generosity will live on in all of our hearts.
He is survived by his parents, Peter and Jamie Van Bergen of Williamsburg; grandmother, Mary Ellen Van Bergen of Williamsburg; brother, Luke of Los Angeles, Calif.; and sister, Elizabeth of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Cathy Tyndall Boyd and the Rev. Pickett Miles will officiate services. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heritage Humane Society or Williamsburg Parent Co-operative Preschool.
