Dr. John Simon de Leeuw, 83, ODU professor who founded Tidewater Trading Post

Dr. John Simon de Leeuw, 83, of Virginia Beach, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016.

Born in Arnhem, the Netherlands on April 3, 1933, he was the son of the late Willem de Leeuw and Annegje Schults. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Riet Goedhart and Henk de Leeuw.

John survived the occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, lived through the battle of Arnhem and witnessed the Allied liberation of Europe. He immigrated to the United States and lived in Canada and Oklahoma before settling in Tidewater, Virginia. Known to many as “Dr. D,” he earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Oklahoma and served as a professor for the Old Dominion University Business School. He founded, owned and operated the Tidewater Trading Post want ad paper and sister companies until his retirement.

Left to cherish his memory: his wife, Mary Jane de Leeuw; siblings, Adri Martin, Gerrit de Leeuw (Elma) and Nell Lankwarden (Joop); children, Winnie Eballar (Bernard), Michael de Leeuw, Dieter de Leeuw (Jennifer) and Jennette Folwell (Byron); grandchildren, Josephine DeLong (Mike), Diana Shapiro (Arin), Danielle Eballar, Jonathan Eballar, Nycole de Leeuw, Tyler de Leeuw, Lydia Folwell, Sydney Folwell; and great grandchild, Sawyer Shapiro.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, 3600 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
