Thelma Lorean McPherson-Boggs, 91, died on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at her home that she loved surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Thelma retired in 1988 from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools after more than 20 years of service. She took care of many families throughout her working years and loved the children. She worked until she was 80 years old and was still driving at age 85.
She was a member of St. Mark AME Church, 1740 Potters Road, Virginia Beach, where she sang in the Gospel Choir. She was a gifted seamstress who loved fashion and interior design. She had the warmest home you would every want to visit. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She lived to see five generations of her family. Family was very important to her. She loved music, and she loved to dance. She said that was what kept her in shape. She made some of the best cornbread you have ever tasted. She has many family and friends who often visited just to have a talk with grandma, or Aunt Thelma.
She was born to the Late Hattie Lou Wiggins-McPherson and John McPherson. Her brothers and sisters, James McPherson, John Sidney McPherson, Laura Frances Smith, Katie Brown-Burden, Louise Rumph, Fannie Allen and Queen Ester Toombs, all preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Boggs Sr.; and one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
She leaves behind five children, Betty Boggs, Shirley Childers (Earl), Cecil Boggs Jr. (Theresa), Larry Boggs Sr. (Darlene) and Kenneth Boggs (Dorothy); granddaughter, whom she adopted and raised, Cynthia Chester (Laymond); and 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Crematory. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church.
