Alfred Tihamer ‘Al’ Monostori, 75, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and dear friend to all that ever met him, passed away quietly in his sleep on Monday, February 29, 2016.
As many know, Al was dealing with complications from several health issues, but in his final days, he was in no pain, had presence of mind, understood what was happening and was at peace in his heart. All who knew Al will say that he was gentle, loving, cared deeply for his family and friends and most of all loved to make others smile and laugh. Al’s final days came quickly to a close and his passing was both dignified and merciful and for that we are all grateful. He is, and will always be, our beloved Papa.
Born in Passaic, N.J., on September 9, 1940, Al was the son of the late Tihamer and Mary Monostori. He is survived by his wife, best friend, and partner of 20 years, Donna (Kitty) Monostori. Al is also survived by his first wife, Jane Searles, the mother of his three children. Left to cherish his memory are Lee Bates, mother to Kitty; his brother, Tim Monostori, and his wife, Leona; his son, Greg Monostori, and his wife, Laurie; his son, Paul Monostori; his daughter, Amy Willis, and her husband, Barry; his stepdaughter, Sherry Gross, and her husband, Michael; his grandchildren, Ryan Monostori, and his wife, Ana, Katelyn Monostori, Dreven Monostori, Trevor McGuire, Peirce McGuire, Taylor Cohen and Marissa Gross; his niece, Ann Monostori; and his nephew, Michael Monostori.
Al was a jeweler and retail sales manager in the early part of his career and later transitioned into industrial sales. He claimed to have retired in 2014, but as we all know, he never really did. He was proud of what he did and loved his customers almost as much as he loved his family. In his leisure time, Al enjoyed playing piano, fishing, hosting barbeques with family and friends and cruising the islands with Kitty.
The family will receive friends for a memorial service to celebrate Al’s life at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A reception for family and friends will follow at Al and Kitty’s home.
