Virginia Lee Vercruysse, 89, gave generously of herself to the homeless, Special Olympics

Virginia Lee Vercruysse, of Virginia Beach, died Oct. 14, 2015, at her home. She was 89.

Virginia was born in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 23, 1925, daughter of the late Clinton and Bernice Brown Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Eugene Vercruysse; sons, James and Robert Vercruysse; brother, Clinton A. Brown Jr.; and sister, Mary Lou Lauber.

She was a longtime and dedicated member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church where she was active in many group activities and other church organizations. She volunteered her time for many friends in need as well as giving generously to the homeless and Special Olympics. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children, Eileen Sundstrom and her husband Fred, of Chesterfield, Stephen Vercruysse, of Petersburg, Dave Vercruysse and his wife Julie, of Virginia Beach, Diane Brown and her husband Jim, of Springfield, Michelle Dawson and her husband Bill, of Virginia Beach and Michael Vercruysse and his wife Jane, of Avon, North Carolina. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as many extended family members and good friends.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please join the family for a reception following the services back at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
