Michael Allen Shiller, 65, W&M theater teacher awarded the Purple Heart during Vietnam

Michael Allen Shiller, of Williamsburg, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2015, at the age of 65.

Michael graduated from Christopher Newport College, continued his education at VA Commonwealth University where he received his master’s degree, followed by doctorate work at from Kent State University in Ohio. He was an assistant professor and director of theater at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota as well as director of theater at the University of Minnesota. Michael also directed plays at the Black Hills Theatre in South Dakota and taught theater at William & Mary University.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Klein and stepfather, Abraham Shiller.

He is survived by his mother, Beverly Shiller and brother, Stephen (Marie) Klein.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
