Lavon Hays Dalby, of Williamsburg, died peacefully at her Windsor Meade residence on the morning of Monday, Oct. 27 2014, at the age of 91.

Born on June 16, 1923, in Larned, Kansas, Lavon was the daughter of Hannah and William “Willie” Hays. She attended Kansas University and graduated in 1946 with an accounting degree.

On June 15, 1946, she was united in marriage with Harry Arthur Dalby. She then worked for an accounting company for about a year until her husband graduated from Kansas University in 1947.

While Harry was working for Amoco, Lavon had three children, Harry Arthur Dalby II (Hal), Philip Hays Dalby (Phil) and Mary Lane Dalby (Lanie). The family moved to Queens Lake in Williamsburg in 1963.

Lavon was a high-spirited woman who had a zeal for life. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality and loved serving others. As a hostess, she ensured that Coke, peanuts and chocolates were available to every guest in her home. She possessed a strong fighting spirit that enabled her to recover from a near-death car accident in 2004.

Her hobbies included bridge, dining out and traveling. As a generous giver, thoughtful correspondent and punctual woman, Lavon routinely mailed handwritten greeting cards with $20 cash enclosed to mark special occasions and gave $20 cash to family members as they departed the driveway to use as gas money.

She was dearly loved by her family and friends from Queens Lake and Windsor Meade. Lavon was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; she will be dearly missed by all.

Lavon was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 65 years, Harry (2011); her son, Hal; and grandson, Allan Dalby.

She is survived by two children, Phil (and Kathy) and Lanie; five grandchildren, Curtis, Scott, John (and Leizl), Joshua (and Clare) Dalby and Rachel (and Tim) Prindle; and four great-grandchildren, McKenna, Ainsley and Asher Dalby and Michelle Prindle.

There will be a short graveside service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at St. Bede’s Catholic Church where Lavon will be interred at the Saint Bede Columbarium in the niche with her husband, Harry.
