Sylvia Elizabeth “Betty” Sutherland Allen, of Yorktown, died Saturday, July, 26, 2014, at the age of 80.
Born in Nora, she was a resident of the Peninsula since 1961. She was a 1952 graduate of Ervington High School in Nora and a 1956 graduate of Berea College in Berea, Ky. She retired in 1990 after 30 years as an elementary school P.E. teacher in the Hampton Public School System and was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority on the Peninsula.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bill Allen; daughter, Amy Lovings and her husband, Marty, of Hampton; son, Billy Allen, Jr., of York County; brothers, sister and their spouses, Hugh and Sada Sutherland, of Pleasant Hill, Ill., Mary and Warren McFarland, of Smithfield, Danny and Karen Sutherland, of Otter Lake, Mich. and Harry and Sallie Sutherland, of Key Largo, Fla.; grandchildren, Pearl King, Jessica Broyles and Christopher Lovings; and many cherished extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Peggy Buelow.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild, 2605 Cunningham Dr., Hampton, VA 23666.
