Joyce Coretta Lassiter Hartmann, of Yorktown, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the age of 84.
She was born and raised in Newport News, graduating from Newport News High School in 1946. She completed nursing school at the University of Virginia in 1950 and, while working as a registered nurse at Maguire Army Hospital in Richmond, she met John J. “Jack” Hartmann. They were married in 1953.
Mrs. Hartmann and her husband made their home in South Amboy, N.J. but she left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom. She often chaperoned class trips and volunteered in the schools. Active in the Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Hartmann was a Sunday school teacher, circle moderator and served on many committees, but she found her joy in singing in the choir.
The family moved to Yorktown in 1972 and Mrs. Hartmann rejoined the workforce, retiring as a school nurse for the York County School Division. She was a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church and treasured her years singing with Yorkminster’s Shalom Singers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John.
She is survived by her son, Michael Hartmann and wife, Ginny, of Lanexa; daughters, Lee Ann Hartmann, of Yorktown and Gail Webster and husband, Jeff, of High Point, N.C.; granddaughters, Caroline and Rebecca; stepson John, wife, Tatter and their children, Stephanie, John and Alan, of Richmond; four great-grandchildren; special “son” of 40 years, Pennie L. Brown; sisters, Janice Bridges and Evalyan Cannon; and brothers, Edward, Robert and Preston Lassiter.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mark Jernigan officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Yorkminster Presbyterian Church Capital Campaign, 6218 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown, VA, or York County Fire & Rescue/Life & Safety, P.O. Box 532, Yorktown, VA 23692.
