Donald B. Morgan, of Williamsburg, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at the age of 79.
He graduated from Mathews High School in 1952 as class president and attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. Mr. Morgan married Georgia Ann Gooch on Feb. 23, 1958, in Lexington, Ky.
He was a member of Wellspring United Methodist Church in Williamsburg for the past 20 years and previously a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Diggs. He was active in Bible study classes and served on many committees and boards at both churches. He was a member of Ruritan Clubs in Williamsburg and Mathews and served in many capacities over the years. He had many vocations during his life, from installing communication systems aboard the USS America, to selling life insurance, working retail and finally retiring as an electrician with The College of William and Mary.
Mr. Morgan’s real passion was the Chesapeake Bay and fishing. He grew up on the bay fishing with hand lines and spent countless hours with his father, sons, grandchildren and his buddies, landing the great variety of fish found around Mathews. Often most of his morning catch went to elderly friends, providing them with meals of fresh fish. Sitting down to a feast of steamed crabs was a source of joy he extended to many. Many friends from Mathews will also remember the prodigious vegetable gardens that provided corn, beans and tomatoes which Mr. Morgan’s wife froze and canned for weeks.
He was born Oct. 20, 1934, in Moon and was preceded in death by his parents, Southey and Inez Morgan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Georgia Ann; daughter, Donnie Morgan and her husband, Michael Gambone, of Moon; sons, Christopher Morgan and his wife, Kathleen, of Toano and Steven Morgan and his wife, Doreen, of Roswell, Ga.; brother-in-law, William Gooch, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; grandchildren, Philip Morgan, of Bridgeport, W.V. and Rachel Morgan, of Williamsburg.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg followed by a funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. Following the service, Mr. Morgan will be taken home to Milford Cemetery, Rt. 643 Moon, in Mathews, for a graveside service and interment from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy to be made in Mr. Morgan’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 213 McLaws Circle, Williamsburg, VA, 23185, in honor of Georgia Morgan.
Please leave online condolences for the family at Nelsen Funeral Home.
