Margaret Munro Shrader, an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown, died Dec. 31, 2013, at the age of 98.
Though most of her life was spent in New England, Ms. Shrader always referred to herself as a Virginian with pride. She was born in Mount Vernon on June 30, 1915, and was the daughter of James Houston Shrader and Annie Allen Hosley Shrader.
She graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in Wollaston, Mass. and entered the Nursing Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She obtained her Master’s from Boston University in 1944 and was active in Nursing Administration throughout her professional life. Being the Director of Nurses at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston was the highlight of her career.
At the height of her career, she gave up that position to become a Sister in the Society of St. Margaret, a religious order associated with the Episcopal Church. After 18 years of obedient service, Ms. Shrader felt called to leave the order and return to an active nursing position. In the early 1970s she moved to Cape Cod, Mass. where she was a Nursing Supervisor at Cape Code Hospital for 11 years. Life on the Cape lent itself readily to two hobbies: raising Kerry Blue Terriers and developing a flourishing “cottage industry” making handcrafted shell ornaments.
She eventually retired and returned to her Virginia roots. At the age of 84 Ms. Shrader began writing devotional literature as a response to the Lord working in her life. Although she suffered from macular degeneration, she worked diligently at a manual typewriter and edited her manuscripts with the help of friends. Her collection of reflections entitled “All The Way With Him” was published in 2005.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Grace Episcopal Church with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
