HISTORIC TRIANGLE — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that they will be suspending many of their highway work zones in addition to lifting various lane closures on interstates in Virginia starting Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m. until Monday, Nov. 29 at 12 p.m.
The decision to free up traffic on many of Virginia’s highways comes after VDOT’s analysis of historical data. This data shows that roads across Virginia experience peak congestions during Thanksgiving week as many people are traveling during this time.
It’s recommended by VDOT that travelers plan their holiday trips accordingly as their data shows that the busiest traffic day is Tuesday between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. They also anticipate that there will be heavy congestion on Wednesday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
VDOT says that there will still be lane closures in some locations. The following is a list of lane closures listed on VDOT’s website for the Historic Triangle area:
- York County: Widening interstate from Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) to Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234). Speed limit reduced to 55 mph westbound through the work zone.
- James City County: Route 612 (Longhill Road) – Widening Longhill Road from east of Williamsburg West drive to Glenburnie Road. Speed limit reduced to 35 mph in both directions through the work zone.
The full list of lane closures for the Hampton Roads region can be viewed at VDOT’s website.
