WILLIAMSBURG— Downtown Williamsburg will host what organizers say is its first large-scale outdoor sports watch party Wednesday as fans gather in Sullivan Square to watch the U.S. men’s national team in a World Cup Round of 32 match.

Culture Fix is partnering with American Outlaws Williamsburg to put on the event, which organizers say marks the first time a live sporting event will be shown on a large outdoor screen in the downtown area.

The watch party will feature the United States facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in the knockout round. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Gates in Sullivan Square open at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Food and beer will be available for purchase. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. In the event of rain, the watch party will move to Legacy Hall.

Alex Spirn, boys director of coaching at Virginia Legacy Soccer Club, is helping organize the event on behalf of the local soccer community.

“The dream is an entire field of viewers screaming and celebrating the game’s moments together and sharing the energy of the match,” Spirn said. “This is an opportunity to share something special as a community — we can all support our nation together in such a divided world.”
