Know before you go: VDOT’s list of weekly lane closures

Drivers on Interstate 64 should expect a series of nightly lane closures — and possibly some delays — through the week.

This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, High Rise and James River bridges from Oct. 14 to Oct. 20.

Work will also continue on segments II and III of the project.

A full list of scheduled closures is as follows:

Bridges

James River Bridge, Route 17
  • Route 17 south single-lane closures Oct. 14, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Stoppages for openings to occur Oct. 17 between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Three to four stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes each. Traffic will be cleared between stops. Expect delays or take alternate routes.

Ramp closures

Segment II
  • Full ramp closures on I-64 with signed detours in place, on Oct. 14-18, as follows:
  • I-64 east and west to Route 60/Busch Gardens (exit 243A), as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 east and west to Route 143 (exit 243B), as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Route 60 on-ramp to I-64 east and west, as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 east and west to Route 199 west (exit 242A), as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 east and west to Route 199 east (exit 242B), as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Route 199 east and west on-ramps to I-64 east and west, as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 east and west to Yorktown Road/Jefferson Avenue (exit 247), as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Jefferson Avenue (Route 143) on-ramps to I-64 east and west, as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Yorktown Road (Route 238) on-ramp to I-64 east, as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
**Detour signs will be in place. All ramps will not be closed at the same time to maintain access to the detour routes.
Segment III:
  •  Full ramp closure at the on-ramp from Merrimac Trail (Route 143) to I-64 west on Oct. 18, from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • Consecutive shoulder closure and speed reduction to 55 mph on I-64 east from Merrimac Trail to the Queens Creek Bridge, starting at 9 p.m. on Oct. 14, for shoulder widening operations. Closure and speed reduction estimated to be in place for approximately three weeks.
I-64: Full ramp closures. Signed detours will be in place:
  • I-64 west off-ramp closure to J Clyde Morris Boulevard south, Oct. 14-16, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 west on-ramp to Merrimac Trail north, Oct. 18, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-264: Full ramp closures. Signed detours will be in place:
  • I-264 east ramp (inside set of lanes) closure to I-64 west Oct. 14, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 east ramp (outside set of lanes) closure to I-64 east Oct. 15-17, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 west off-ramp closure to Military Highway north:
    • Oct. 14, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct. 15-17, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 east on-ramp closure from Military Highway north Oct. 14-17, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 west on-ramp closure from Military Highway south Oct. 14-17, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 east/west on-ramps closure at Ballentine Boulevard Oct. 16-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-264 east off-ramp closure to Ballentine Boulevard;
    • Oct. 16-18, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct. 19, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Oct. 20, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.
I-664, Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel:
  • Full ramp closures. Signed detours will be in place:
    • I-664 south off-ramp closure to VA-164 west Oct. 14-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • I-664 north on-ramp closure from VA-164 west Oct. 14-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • I-664 south on-ramp closure from VA-164 west, Oct. 14-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • I-664 north off-ramp closure to VA-164 west, Oct. 14-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
VA-164: Full ramp closures. Signed detours will be in place:
  • VA-164 east on-ramp closures from Cedar Lane Oct. 17-20, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • VA-164 west off-ramp closure to College Drive Oct. 14-19, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • VA-164 west on-ramp closure from Towne Point Road Oct. 14-19, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Lane Closures

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel:
  • Single-lane closure west at the tunnel, Oct. 17-18, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closure east at the tunnel, Oct. 16-17, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closure east/west and the Willoughby and HRBT bridges;
  • Oct. 14-18, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Oct. 19, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Oct. 20, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
I-64 Express Lanes: Full closures in both directions.
  • Oct. 15-18, 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.
  • Oct. 18, 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 19, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements
  • Newtown Road south is closed under I-264 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights through October. Signed detours are in place.
  • I-64 west traffic will be slowed to approximately 15 mph and potentially stopped between the Greenbrier Parkway and the I-264 interchange beginning about 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, for approximately 15 minutes for overhead sign work. Traffic will be restricted from entering I-64 west at Indian River Road during this operation. The operation may be repeated.
  • The left turn onto Center Drive from Newtown Road north closed for up to four weeks starting the night of Sunday, Oct. 14, for utility relocation work at Newtown Road. Motorists will also be restricted from turning left out of Center Drive onto Newtown Road north. Signed detours will be in place for both movements.
I-664, Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel:
  • Single-lane closure south Oct. 16, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closure north Oct. 14-15, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-564, Norfolk:
  • I-564 east from Runway Tunnel to Terminal Boulevard dual-lane closures starting 7 p.m. Oct. 12 until 2 p.m. on Oct. 15.
  • I-564 east from Runway Tunnel to Terminal Blvd. dual-lane closures 7 p.m. Oct. 15 to 2 p.m. the next day.
  • I-564 east at Runway Tunnel dual-lane closure Oct. 15-18, 10 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  • I-564 east from Runway Tunnel to Terminal Boulevard dual-lane closures Oct. 18, 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. the next day.
  • I-564 east from Runway Tunnel to Terminal Boulevard dual-lane closures starting 7 p.m. Oct. 19 until 2 p.m. on Oct. 22.
  • I-564 west from I-64 to Terminal Blvd. single-lane closure Oct. 15-18, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • I-564 west from Terminal Boulevard to the Runway Tunnel dual-lane closures Oct. 15-19, 9 a.m. to 5 a.m.
