The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Chesapeake Field Office has charged a Newport News teen for allegedly making threats to do “serious bodily injury on school property.”
The investigation began after state police were notified of “a threatening statement made by a 17-year-old male during a phone conversation with a Newport News merchant Wednesday morning,” according to a news release from the Virginia State Police.
“The teen had called the business to inquire about purchasing a firearm and during the course of that phone call made reference to firing the gun at school,” said Corinne N. Geller, state police spokeswoman.
State police and their counterparts in Newport News identified and found the teen Thursday.
“After consultation with the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney, the juvenile was taken into custody and charged,” Geller said.
State police did not release further information about the case, citing an open investigation.
