Local Sentara facilities ranked among Hampton Roads’ best hospitals

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the top hospital in Hampton Roads, followed by Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, according to rankings recently released by U.S. News & World Report.

Ranking at a not too distant third is Sentara Leigh Hospital, also in Virginia Beach.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center tied for fourth in Hampton Roads with Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. It also is ranked 14th statewide.

Hampton’s Sentara CarePlex Hospital came in at No. 6 in Hampton Roads, and ranks No. 20 in the state. This is the first time Sentara CarePlex has achieved a state and regional ranking. It can be attributed to high performing programs in heart failure and joint replacement, according to a news release from Sentara.

For the 18th straight year, the Cardiology & Heart Program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s Top 50 heart programs in the U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” edition.

The program at Sentara Norfolk ranks No. 32 in the nation this year. It earned two additional Top 50 national rankings from U.S. News & World Report: diabetes & endocrinology in conjunction with Eastern Virginia Medical School, and nephrology.

Sentara Princess Anne is also recognized as ninth best in the state with Sentara Leigh ranking 13th.

Sentara Princess Anne excels in geriatrics, nephrology and pulmonology. Sentara Leigh is noted as high performing in orthopedics, according to the news release.

The U.S. News & World Report creates its rankings from a pool of nearly 5,000 hospitals. The report takes special consideration of factors including survival and remission rates, patient safety and quality of nursing care.
