HAMPTON ROADS — Many temporary lane closures across Virginia will be lifted from noon Friday through noon Tuesday to accommodate Memorial Day weekend travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced.

Drivers should still expect to encounter some long-term work zones that remain in place.

VDOT encourages motorists to check conditions before heading out. The state’s 511 Virginia system provides real-time updates on traffic, incidents, construction and congestion, along with access to traffic cameras and weather information. The site also includes a holiday travel trends map showing when traffic has historically been heaviest on Virginia interstates during Memorial Day weekend.

In Hampton Roads, drivers heading to Virginia Beach or the North Carolina Outer Banks may want to consider using Interstate 664 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternative to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, where construction continues.

Peninsula traffic bound for Virginia Beach can take I-664 south through the Monitor-Merrimac tunnel and exit at 15A to I-264 east.

Drivers headed to the Outer Banks can take I-664 south to I-64 west, then exit at 291B to the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168) toward Nags Head.

Motorists who encounter hazardous road conditions can contact VDOT’s customer service center online or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD.
