Police want to know who shot this 10-year-old boy in the head

NEWPORT NEWS — Police here are piecing together the circumstances surrounding a shooting that seriously injured a 10-year-old boy while leaving a birthday party Wednesday night.

The shooting happened in the 400 block of Crescent Way at around 8:04 p.m.

The boy was taken to a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the head. He was later flown to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk.

Police said Thursday morning the boy remains in “critical but stable condition.”

A 42-year-old man also was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg. He was shot during the same incident, but his relationship with the child remains unclear.

“As he (man) was being transported to the hospital by another subject, they were involved in a vehicle crash,” Newport News Police spokesman Brandon Maynard said. “They continued on to a nearby hospital.  After the second victim was dropped off, the driver returned back to the accident scene.”

The man was treated and released Wednesday night.

No motive or suspect information were immediately released.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to call the Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP.
