
NEWPORT NEWS — Police have identified the man they say struck a marked police cruiser with his truck Saturday night.
Waverly Callicutt, 57, of Hampton, is charged with DUI third or subsequent within 10 years, failure to report injury during accident, driving after forfeiture of license, disorderly conduct, traffic signal violation, defective/unsafe equipment, and eluding.
On Saturday around 9:30 p.m. a Newport News Police officer was in his marked police car stopped at a red light near Prince Drew Road and Warwick Boulevard when he was struck from behind by a truck.
Police said the driver of the truck, later identified as Callicutt, fled the scene.
The officer pursued the vehicle for a short distance to the Riverside entrance off Warwick Boulevard where Callicutt struck another vehicle driven by a woman, police said.
The woman was taken to the hospital, Police said she suffered “non-life-threatening injuries.”
Callicutt was arrested shortly after that crash.
The officer involved in the initial crash was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
