GLOUCESTER— The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society recently donated pet leashes to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, with efforts geared towards focusing on protecting pets during accidents and medical emergencies.

The leashes will be carried on emergency response vehicles and used when pets are present at emergency scenes, helping responders safely secure animals and prevent additional stress, injury, or escape during already critical situations.
“Pets are family members, and emergencies are frightening for them just as they are for people,” said Jim Camp, Executive Director of GMHS. “By providing these leashes, we hope to give first responders an extra tool to keep pets safe while they care for the people who love them.”
According to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, emergency scenes can be chaotic, and animals may react unpredictably. Having pet-specific equipment readily available allows responders to better protect animals while maintaining safety for personnel and the public.
The society also said that the donation reflects GMHS’s ongoing commitment to community collaboration and animal welfare beyond the shelter walls. Through partnerships like this, GMHS continues to support both pets and the people who serve Gloucester and Mathews counties.
