WILLIAMSBURG — A Cut Your Own Sunflower event this weekend will help raise funds for the Williamsburg Community Growers.
The Williamsburg Community Growers will open its sunflower field for pictures and picking Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Each stem is $1 and the event is cash-only. The garden is located near Wanner Stadium at the Warhill Sports Complex.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the organization will also host a free garden workshop at the property on the art of preserving fruits and vegetables by freezing, canning, pickling and curing.
“Williamsburg Community Growers is completely unique in the area, with our 100-plus-person community garden and working farm. This week is a great opportunity for folks to come out and see what we do and support our mission by cutting sunflowers to take home. Stay for one of our free workshops and learn how we promote healthy living and sustainable practices,” said Vince Zangardi, Williamsburg Community Growers president.
The farm and gardens, which work to provide a healthy community ecosystem, allow community participation along with harvesting local produce shared with those in need. The farm runs predominantly on grant money and donations.
All funds raised from the sunflower picking event will be donated back to the nonprofit community garden and farm.
The group also notes that bees are commonly seen around the farm, so guests with allergies may want to take any necessary precautions, just in case.
