
HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Area colleges and universities will host commencement ceremonies this week.
Notable graduation events for each school are listed below:
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC):
Commencement Ceremony will take place on Thurs., May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum — 1000 Coliseum Drive in Hampton.
Christopher Newport University (CNU):
The Candlelight Ceremony on Thursday, May 15 begins at 8:30 p.m. on the Great Lawn. Open to all graduates and their families.
Graduation Ceremonies take place on Saturday, May 17, beginning with its graduate processional that starts at 8 a.m on the Great Lawn. Graduates’ names are not called during the Conferral Ceremony — that will happen later throughout the day during the Grad Walk, a recent addition to Christopher Newport’s Commencement.

Candlelight Ceremony on Thursday, May 15, from 9:30 p.m. until 11 p.m.
The night before spring graduation, all graduating seniors are invited to the Wren Yard for a candle-lighting ceremony. This event is for William & Mary graduating students. Guests are welcome to attend but will be directed to a guest viewing area behind the students. Please note there is no seating for this event.
Graduation Commencement takes place on Friday, May 16, at Zable Stadium (in case of inclement weather, it will be moved to Kaplan Arena).
- 4:30 p.m. — Gates to Zable Stadium open for guests (tickets required)
- 5 p.m. — Walk Across Campus (Wren Building)
- 5:30 p.m. — Candidates for degrees line up (Sadler Terrace)
- 5:35 p.m. — All guests are asked to be seated
- 6:00 p.m. — Academic procession begins (degree candidates, faculty, and official party enter)
- Approx. 8:00 p.m. — Ceremony ends
