Volunteers Needed for Gloucester County Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee

Volunteers are needed for the Gloucester County Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee. (Gloucester County)

GLOUCESTER — The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors is looking for five volunteers, one from each of the county’s magisterial districts, to take part in a Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, the county announced.

The Comprehensive Plan acts as a general, long-range guide concerning the overall growth and development of the county for local decision-makers. This committee will assist the Planning Commission in its review of the current Comprehensive Plan and its development of a plan of action for updates to the document for presentation to the Board of Supervisors, the county explained.

The PC will be reviewing the plan with the Steering Committee members at its monthly meetings on the first Thursday of the month and most likely a second meeting, on the third Thursday of the month. Depending upon the other items on the Commission’s agenda, the county says that committee members may not need to attend all PC meetings but will need to be present for all discussions of the Comprehensive Plan Update.

The goal of this update is to identify which sections of the plan need to be updated, as well as those that can be left alone, and report their findings back to the Board of Supervisors, the county said.

The Code of Virginia requires that each locality’s Planning Commission prepare, and Board of Supervisors adopt, a Comprehensive Plan. The county implements its Comprehensive Plan through amendments to the County Code, land use decisions, and funding local and regional projects in partnership with state agencies, regional Planning District Commissions, Economic Development Authorities and other entities. The commission must review this document every five years to determine what revisions or updates, if any, are necessary.

Those with questions about the Comprehensive Plan review and/or the Steering Committee’s role in the process should contact 804-693-1224 to speak with planning staff.

To be considered for an appointment, sign up on the county’s Volunteer Board on the “Boards and Commissions” page of the county website.
