Habitat for Humanity Now Accepting 2025 Applications for First-Time Homebuyers

(Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg)

NEWPORT NEWS — Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg announced it is now accepting applications for its 2025 First-Time Homebuyer Program.

Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.

According to the nonprofit, it partners with local families to build decent and affordable homes. Selected homebuyers purchase their homes through an affordable, zero-interest mortgage over 20 to 30 years. Monthly payments include property taxes and homeowner’s insurance.

In addition to financial qualifications, selected applicants must contribute at least 300 hours of “sweat equity” by helping build their own home and the homes of others, it adds.

Who Can Apply?

According to the organization, applicants must:

  • Be a first-time homebuyer (no homeownership within the past three years)
  • Have lived or worked in one of the following localities for at least 12 months: Charles City County, Hampton, James City County, New Kent County, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg or York County
  • Meet income and credit requirements
  • Demonstrate a need for affordable housing
  • Be willing to complete the required sweat equity hours
