Jamestown 4-H Educational Center Seeks Assistance After Tree Damages Cabin

JAMESTOWN — A recent storm caused significant damage to a key cabin at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center and it is asking the community for support in rebuilding.
“When the storms that came through last week, we did not have anyone on-site at the time — safety is a number one priority — but, after the winds died down we found our 100-year-old oak tree had fallen and crushed one of our cabins.” Sue Williams, Center Director, said. “I don’t want this to sound like a crisis or a terrible tragedy — no one was hurt and that is really the most important thing.”
“Generations of campers, alumni and staff have sat under that tree and to see it completely uprooted from the ground — that wind had to be forceful,” explained Williams.
Founded in 1928, the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center is one of six in the commonwealth and serves 23 localities in Southwest Virginia.
This summer, the center plans to host over 3,000 children, said Williams, with most of the programs filling up to capacity almost instantly.
“As we start to look at summer planning we are down 30 beds,” Williams stated.
With substantial damage, crucial repairs are necessary to ensure the center can continue operating at full capacity and providing the best experience for the children who rely on the programs.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization relies on community support and has started a fundraising campaign to bridge the gap left by insurance and expedite these vital repairs.
Williams said, “All funds raised will go towards the camp program and the rebuild.”
“No matter the size, your gift will play an important role in helping us restore this essential space. We would also be incredibly grateful if you could spread the word by sharing this campaign with friends, family, and fellow supporters,” the center said in a Facebook post.
“A strong sense of community has always been at the heart of what we do, and your support means everything as we work to rebuild,” the center’s post continued. “Thank you for standing with us and helping us continue to provide life-changing experiences for children in our community.”
