WILLIAMSBURG — The League of Women Voters-Williamsburg area awarded $1,500 scholarships to three graduating seniors, one from each of the WJCC public high schools.
The recipients of the scholarships are Lafayette High School’s Clara Burgess, who will attend the University of Georgia; Warhill High School’s Caroline Findlay, who will attend East Carolina University Honors College; and Jamestown High School’s Tzipora Hyman, who will attend Virginia Tech.
The scholarships were given out during an awards ceremony hosted by the Williamsburg Community Foundation Scholarship Committee at Warhill High School, Sunday, June 4. This year, there were 84 scholarships awarded through the foundation totaling $159,000.
“Thanks to an incredibly generous donation, our League was able to award three $1,500 scholarships this year,” said Vice President Laura Tripp.
The League of Women Voters (LWV) scholarships were administered by the Williamsburg Community Foundation for graduating WJCC public high school students pursuing study in civics, government, politics, law, or a related area. According to the organization, preference is given to a student who participates in student government and/or an organization like the LWV that encourages civic involvement.
LWV-VA board members Laura Tripp and Denise Koch participated in the awards ceremony.
“We were so pleased to meet and speak with our recipients. We wish them a wonderful first year and plan to stay in touch,” Tripp said.
The scholarship winners were also invited to join the League and to attend the League’s upcoming annual meeting.
