WILLIAMSBURG — A downed power line caused a brush fire in Redoubt Park on the morning of Sept. 26, severely damaging a footbridge.
Williamsburg firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:51 a.m. to find a blaze in progress at Redoubt No. 1, according to a press release from the City of Williamsburg. The fire spread to a 75- by 100-foot area of the forest park and damaged the footbridge in the process. The fire was finally extinguished at 1:58 a.m.
The wooded, 22-acre Redoubt Park preserves and interprets two of the 14 Civil War earthwork forts called redoubts that made up the Confederate’s Williamsburg line during the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862. The battle resulted in more than 3,800 Union and Confederate casualties and left the Union in control of the Virginia Peninsula.
Public access to Redoubt No. 1 will be closed indefinitely.
