HAMPTON ROADS — AAA Tidewater is partnering with Drive Safe Hampton Roads, Walmart and other community organizations to collect old and damaged child safety seats for its thirty-second year.
Throughout the month of February, “old, used, borrowed and abused” child seats will be collected at any AAA Tidewater branch, including the Williamsburg location, 6517 Richmond Rd. Residents can also take these seats to AAA Car Care Center or participating Walmart locations.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads, AAA Tidewater, Walmart, Waste Management of Virginia, Inc., Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and Hoffman Beverage Co. are partnering on this initiative.
This program is one that serves to educate families about the potential dangers of using car seats past the date recommended by the manufacturer. Additionally, it provides education regarding purchasing secondhand seats, as well as using ones that are missing parts or have no traceable recall information.
“Some people may not realize how worn and damaged their child safety seats actually are”, Kate Wilson, AAA Tidewater traffic safety manager, said. “Our goal is to take these child safety seats out of circulation so that our children can continue to remain safe while in a vehicle.”
Walmart is providing a $5 gift card for each seat (with a two-per-person limit).
Seats can be dropped off between Feb. 1-28 at specific locations that can be found by clicking here.
