Due to impending storms with high winds throughout the week, this event has been canceled.

WILLIAMSBURG —  Williamsburg Parks and Recreation department will host its StoryWalk event at Waller Mill Park this Saturday, March 13.

This self-guided reading walk will take residents and their little ones on a literary-filled journey in the great outdoors.

StoryWalk is an activity that encourages children and their families to read while still being engaged with physical activity, according to the department’s news release on Tuesday. Thirty different reading stations will be set up, themed after Laura Murray’s children’s book, “The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose at School.”

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we needed to find new ways to engage the community,” said Colleen Wilson, program specialist for Williamsburg Parks and Recreation department, in an email on Tuesday. “Our StoryWalk will be on display for one week, allowing families the flexibility of coming at their own convenience”.

Residents are welcome to visit Waller Mill Park on March 13 through March 21 to read a “delightful story” about a leprechaun who causes all kinds of trouble on St. Patrick’s Day with a heroic Gingerbread Man that saves the day.

On March 13, residents are encouraged to look for a “lucky gold coin” along the trail and return the coin to the Park Office to receive a free ice cream.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their walking shoes and reading glasses for the event.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson.
