A now former employee of Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg is facing allegations she stole thousands of dollars from the organization.
Brandi Kay Godwin,40, recently turned herself in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
James City Police said Godwin, of Hampton, is charged with three counts of felony embezzlement.
Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg is a social-model hospice that provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to enhance the quality of living for individuals facing the last phases of life and the people who love them. It is located at 4445 Powhatan Parkway in Williamsburg.
Authorities said a member of the Hospice House board of directors in July provided documents to investigators “indicating that an employee, Brandi Kay Godwin, had been embezzling funds from Hospice House for more than a year.”
Godwin’s LinkedIn page indicated she was the business manager of the organization.
“After reviewing bank records, credit card statements, reconciliation reports and payroll records, investigators determined that Godwin had made numerous personal and unauthorized purchases using both a credit card and checking account belonging to Hospice House,” according to a news release from James City County Police. “Godwin had also written checks to herself and documented those payments as being paid to someone else. It is estimated that Godwin embezzled more than $50,000 between March 12, 2018 and July 31, 2020.”
Police did not provide additional details about the case, citing an open investigation.
