Newport News woman killed in hit-run in Hampton, police say

HAMPTON – A 24-year-old Newport News woman was killed in what police are investigating as a hit-and-run Thursday morning.

She was identified as Kayla Hiegl.

Hampton Police, in a news release, said officers were called to the 5100 Block of West Mercury Boulevard at around 1:52 a.m.

There, they found Hiegl “lying in the roadway near her vehicle.”

She died at the scene, police said.

Authorities said Hiegl was standing next to her disabled Chevrolet Cobalt when she was struck by a passing vehicle. The suspect vehicle is believed to be red with front end damage and was last seen fleeing the area eastbound on West Mercury Boulevard.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the crash or the whereabouts of the vehicle to call the Hampton Police Division at 757–727–6111 or the Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP.

The crash remains under investigation.
