Man killed by construction truck on I-64 work zone in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH — A 43-year-old Chesapeake man died after falling off a truck at a road work site here Sunday night.

The Virginia State Police identified the man as Toney Darnell Saunders Jr., of the 500 block of Centerville Turnpike.

At 7:47 p.m. Sunday, police were called about the incident at a road work site on Interstate 64 eastbound, west of Providence Road.

State Police’s investigation indicated a construction truck (2018 Hino model 195), carrying road cones and barrels was backing up on the shoulder within the lane closure, picking up cones in the work zone.

Saunders was a passenger in the vehicle. He lost his footing and fell from the truck’s cargo area onto the roadway and was backed over by the vehicle, police said.

He died at the scene.

Police said the vehicle is owned by Spivey Rental Inc.

“There are no charges at this time,” Sgt. Michelle Anaya, State Police spokeswoman.
