Michael blows, dumps rain; Peninsula under flash flood warning, watch

Tropical Storm Michael has brought wind, rain in Hampton Roads, and at least one report of a tornado touching down in the Norge/Toano area Thursday night.

As of 8:30 p.m., there were no confirmed reports of injuries or damages in connection with the storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning until 2:15 a.m. Friday – the warning includes Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, York County, Poquoson, James City County, Gloucester County, Southeastern King and Queen County, Mathews County, Eastern New Kent County and Southeastern King William County.

A flash flood watch was issued until 8 a.m. Friday. A tornado warning for York, James City County, Gloucester Point, Gloucester and Achilles expired at 7:45 p.m. Thursday – a tornado watch expired at 9 p.m.

The NWS also issued a high wind warning until 4 a.m. Friday.

At 8:43 p.m. Thursday, Dominion Energy’s online map is showing more than 11,000 people without power in Southeastern Virginia, the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck.

Thursday afternoon, Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in anticipation of impacts from the storm.

The order is designed to mobilize resources, help Virginia mitigate any damage, and to streamline the process the state uses to provide assistance to other states through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.

State agencies are working closely with localities to identify any needs and to provide resources.
