VIRGINIA BEACH — Sights, sounds, and smells will likely be more noticeable than usual this week around Naval Air Station Oceana, which this year is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
The base announced recently that F/A-18 Hornets would be conducting flight demonstration training above the airfield in preparation for the annual air show, which will take place there on Sept. 22-23.
NAS Oceana authorities said the jets will be performing aerobatic maneuvers and may be flying in areas where they typically don’t.
Residents can expect a little more noise than usual.
It was also announced that this week the base would be doing a “controlled burn” of vegetation around the airfield.
Smoke coming from the installation is nothing to worry about and residents nearer the base may notice the smell of burning vegetation.
This year’s air show will once again be headlined by the Navy’s own Blue Angels.
The air show will also include tactical demonstrations by a Air Force F-22 Raptor and the Navy’s F/A 18 Super Hornet.
The Canadian Snowbirds will also perform. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are a 431 Air Demonstration Squadron and a Canadian icon, comprised of Canadian Armed Forces members and National Defense Public Service employees.
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a bi-national organization of the United States and Canada that is charged with the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning for North America.
General admission to the show and parking are free, but upgraded seating is available for purchase.
