Here’s how you can help ‘Shatter the Silence’

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Virginians ages 15 to 34, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

It’s time to “Shatter the Silence.”

Now in its third year, Shatter the Silence will take place at the Attucks Theatre, 1010 Church St. in Norfolk on Sept. 14.

The free interactive event will be from 4:30 pm. to 8 p.m.

The event aims to encourage teens and young adults to ask for help by learning about the warning signs of suicide and gaining information on the resources available in their communities.

Survivors, community leaders, and professionals will share stories that demonstrate the value of speaking up. There will also be performances by Glam Kids and Teens With a Purpose, along with several speakers, including Michelle Peterson from the Sarah Michelle Peterson Foundation.

Attendees will receive a boxed dinner and an opportunity to win a variety of prizes such as tickets to Busch Gardens, an iPad, and dozens of restaurant gift cards.

This event is a collaborative effort between the community services boards of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake.
