VIRGINIA BEACH — Soon, we can kiss summer goodbye, but that doesn’t mean activities will be in short supply.
Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation has a fall schedule of events to keep you and the family active and entertained as the hot, sticky weather eases and the leaves begin to change.
Just check out this list:
Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation’s Fall Golf Tournament (Sept. 14 | Red Wing Lake Golf Course | $100 per person)
Come out to Red Wing Lake Golf Course for an afternoon of golf and philanthropy, benefitting the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation. The format is 4-person Florida Best Ball and prizes will be awarded to the Men’s and Women’s Longest Drives and Closest to the Pin. The event begins with a free bucket of balls for warm-up on the driving range, followed by a shotgun start. Snacks and refreshments are provided throughout the day. Entry fee includes green fees, cart rentals, a breakfast biscuit, hot lunch after play, and flight/division prizes.
Mount Trashmore Movie Night: Homeward Bound (Sept. 15; rain date Sept. 16 | 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. | Mount Trashmore Park)
Bring lawn chairs, blankets, family and friends…and maybe some tissues. Bring your dogs, too. Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s mascot Barks & Rex will also be there for a meet and greet. The movie starts at dusk. Food will be available for purchase.
Bow Creek Block Party (Sept. 29 | 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Bow Creek Recreation Center)
A DJ will pump up the party while you play games, check out vendors and exhibitors, have fun with face painting, and snack on treats from local food trucks (food available for purchase.) No membership required.
Archery Demo Day (Sept. 29 | 1 to 3 p.m. | ages 6 and up | Bayside Recreation Center)
All equipment is provided at this free event that is open to the public (no membership required.) Participants ages 6 to 16 must have a parent or guardian present.
Touch-a-Truck (Oct. 13 | Noon to 3 p.m. | Williams Farm Recreation Center)
Rev your engines and let your kids experience the thrill of sitting behind the wheel of some of their favorite four-wheeled vehicles including the fire department’s monster truck, a police car, street sweeper, dump truck and more. The first hour of the event will be a low-sensory hour. This is an opportunity for families with children who are anxious about loud sounds and blinking lights to attend the event without those effects.
Mount Trashmore Movie Night: Wonder (Oct. 20; rain date Oct. 21 | 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. | Mount Trashmore Park)
Parks & Recreation is inviting everyone who comes to wear orange to be part of a drone photo being taken overhead. Parks & Recreation is celebrating the culmination of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s first Unity Week. Celebrate with them by signing a giant unity pledge board, and doing something kind to include someone else. Movie starts at dusk. Food will be available for purchase.
Ghoula Palooza (Oct. 27 | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Great Neck Park)
Dress up your kids and pets to have a ghoulishly good time Trick-or-Treating through Great Neck Park. Frighteningly fun family fitness activities, crafts, inflatables, petting zoo and more will ensure the entire family enjoys a beautiful – but spooky – day at the park. Free and open to the public.
Santa’s Stocking Old Fashioned Craft Bazaar (Nov. 3 & 4 at Princess Anne Recreation Center; Nov 17 & 18 at Kempsville Recreation Center | Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
An annual holiday tradition that’s now in its 40th year, this event features over 100 different craft vendors each weekend. Crafters will be selling unique handmade items, everything from stocking stuffers to fine works of art, all at budget-friendly prices. Visit Parks & Recreation’s website for information about free visits with Santa and child care. Vendor applications are being accepted for both weekends, but space is limited.
