VIRGINIA BEACH — A 43-year-old registered sex offender who authorities say pointed a gun at a woman in a bathroom at Tidewater Community College here and tried to assault her last year, will serve some time in prison.

Jarod Jamale Jones pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of a firearm by a violent felon, felony eluding, four counts of failure to register as a sex offender, brandishing a firearm, driving on a suspended license, and three counts of probation violation.

He was sentenced to 89 years, 42 months and 15 days – with all but 10 years suspended, according to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Jones was convicted of attempted rape in 1997, according to court records.

On June 28 last year, Jones went to the ladies’ gym bathroom at TCC and confronted a woman.

He pointed a gun at her head and told her “Don’t scream,” prosecutors said.

But the woman screamed and Jones fled the scene.

Jones was arrested two days later after he led police on a car chase from the intersection of Holland Road and Dam Neck Road to Oceana Boulevard.

Police tried to pull Jones over after they spotted a vehicle that fit the description of a car connected to TCC incident.

The pursuit lasted five to minutes. A woman jumped out of the vehicle after it crashed screaming, “He has a gun! He has a gun,” prosecutors said.

After arresting Jones, police found a gun on the driver’s side floorboard.
