VIRGINIA BEACH — Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is giving families a few opportunities in the coming weeks to learn more about the snakes and frogs and turtles that can be found in the refuge.
The program, Snakes, Frogs, and Turtles, will be offered May 26, 27, and 28, and June 9 and 10, with all of the programs starting at 9:30 a.m.
It’s a great chance to become better acquainted with some of the local wildlife.
“The event is for families and we encourage children and their parents to attend,” said Erica Ryder, visitor services specialist at Back Bay. She said the event itself is free, but there is a $5 fee for entry into the park.
The programs, which will last about two hours, will look at the different reptiles and amphibians that can be found in the park, and include a mile hike along the trails in search of wildlife.
Ryder said they recommend attendees wear closed-toe shoes and sunscreen. Hats may also be a good idea, and bug spray may be helpful.
“We start with a short introduction about reptiles and amphibians, then begin our walk along the refuge’s Bay Trail,” Ryder said, adding they prefer people call ahead to register, 757-301-7329, ext. 3106.
The trail is flat and is accessible by strollers and wheelchairs.
