VIRGINIA BEACH — With all due respect to baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie, there’s really nothing more American than a juicy hunk of ground beef grilled to perfection and resting on a toasted bun.
And what restaurant doesn’t want to be known as home to the best burger in Virginia Beach? Almost all of them do of course, and to that end Coastal Virginia Magazine has arranged for what might be the biggest battle of its kind ever in the history of Virginia Beach: The CoVa Battle of the Burgers.
“This is the first (of this size) that we are aware of,” said Lisa Davenport, director of marketing for VistaGraphics Inc. “And it’s all about our local restaurants.”
The battle will take place at the Military Aviation Museum on Saturday April 28 from 12-5 p.m., and will feature delicious creations from 15 area restaurants. The military museum is a fitting location for a battle like this.
“We have had a few events there and it is always a great location for outdoor events, with a wonderful backdrop of the planes,” Davenport said.
Although the “combatants” are sure to behave in a civilized manner, they’ll undoubtedly be fighting ferociously to not only win over area burger aficionados, but also for the top prize: The People’s Choice winner will be featured on a cover of Coastal Virginia Magazine in 2019.
While mouth-watering hamburgers are the focus of the event, when is grilled meat complete without a cold beer as a side?
Thirteen area breweries will be on-hand serving cold brews to help attendees wash down their burgers.
“What pairs better with a burger than a beer?” Davenport said.
Burgers will be served in slider-sized versions, and the Culinary Institute of Virginia will offer a signature burger crafted for the event.
Tickets to the battle are going fast, she said, and can be purchased online. Attendees must be 21 years old or older.
