VIRGINIA BEACH — City Council will hold its informal session at 3 p.m. Tuesday. They will not hold any formal votes during the informational session, but much of the background for formal decisions is discussed during these workshops.
Here are a few agenda items to look out for:
- City Manager David Hansen will present the site evaluation for the proposed sports center near the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The evaluation, prepared by MEB General Contractors — who have an interim agreement with the city for the sports center’s development — provides pros and cons of each possible building configuration and site of the proposed sports complex. The city wants to capture some of the “sports tourism” market by building the complex, according to Deputy City Manager Ron Williams, who has said the proposed complex could contain more than a dozen basketball courts, as well as running tracks for competitions.
- Here is a list of public hearing notices for Virginia Beach’s proposed FY 2018-2019 operating budget and capital improvement plan.
- The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation will request a formal name change and change in relationship with the city. The development corporation is now a self-sufficient nonprofit and will request complete independence from the city. The development corporation was created in 1985 to help the city provide affordable housing to its residents. The development corporation currently owns and manages more than 410 units of affordable rental housing throughout the city.
- The city’s public works, public utilities, IT, and the planning and community development departments will present their respective FY 2018-2019 budget briefings to City Council.
- Released with Hansen’s “Friday Package” of materials for City Council meetings were several fact sheets prepared in response to past inquiries from the council;
- Answers to questions from Council member John Moss on Hansen’s debt briefing that he provided council during their March 27 meeting.
- Requests for information from Council member Rosemary Wilson about the city’s use of the stormwater utility fee.
- Questions about the 2018-2019 budget from various council members.
Tuesday’s workshop will take place in the City Council conference room, on the second floor of City Hall at 3 p.m.
