VIRGINIA BEACH — A Chesapeake man who hit and killed a Norfolk woman while driving drunk will spend a little more than 4 years in prison.
Twenty-nine-year-old Christopher Hudson Kita, of the 2800 block of Wesley Road, pleaded guilty in August to hitting and killing 22-year-old Teja Freeman while driving drunk on I-264 west on March 5.
Nearly four months after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence, Kita was sentenced to 10 years and 365 days in prison.
Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge Glenn R. Croshaw suspended six years and 335 days of that sentence, leaving Kita with 4 years and 30 days to serve, according to a news release from the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.
Kita was also fined $500 and his drivers license was suspended indefinitely.
Kita crashed into Freeman’s car, which was stopped and disabled in the left lane of I-264 near Witchduck Road, around 3:30 a.m. Officials say she had her right blinker on before the crash happened.
When questioned, Kita told police he’d had one margarita at a friend’s house before the crash. Later, police found pictures in his phone that showed he’d been at a bar that night, according to the news release.

Police noticed Kita smelled of alcohol and showed other signs of impairment, like having slurred speech, glassy eyes and a hard time balancing. His blood alcohol content levels were twice the legal limit, officials said.
Witnesses told police that Kita was driving aggressively and speeding. After running tests on Kita’s car, police determined he may have been driving as fast as 78 mph before the crash.
When the crash happened Kita was out of jail on bond for a DUI that occurred a month before. He was convicted of reckless driving in connection to that case.
