VIRGINIA BEACH — Take a dip in the chilly Atlantic Ocean for a good cause this winter.
The annual Virginia Beach Polar Plunge Festival to support the Special Olympics will be held Feb. 2-3 at the Hilton Oceanfront Hotel. Registration is now open, and organizers are looking for volunteers.
Around 3,000 attendees take the plunge annually, and for next year’s event, there are plenty of new additions.
After taking the plunge, participants are welcome to the “post-plunge party” for music, food and drink specials at the at the Hyatt’s Ocean 27. This all-day event’s new perks for taking the plunge also include a photo booth, drinks from Big Ugly Brewing, a local artisan marketplace, & free Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
As in years past, those taking the icy dip will enjoy live music; beachfront races for runners; a costume contest and parade; and free Wawa hot chocolate and coffee.
The top five fundraising teams are entered into a giveaway for a shot at winning one of four free airline vouchers to anywhere in the United States. There are other prizes to be won, including warm towels and a new VIP experience under a heated tent.
Younger participants can take the plunge for a great cause as well. Students in grades 3-12 can join the “Cool School Challenge” Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m.
