A York County man is under investigation after a United States Marine reported the man befriended military families and spied on them — including while they were in the bathroom.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Marine on Oct. 21 after he discovered a Logitech spy clock in the York County man’s bathroom, according to a search warrant filed Oct. 24 in the York-Poquoson General District Court.
The man befriended the man on Facebook, the warrant states, and found the man was a “big supporter” of the military.
The Marine reached out to mutual friends he had with the York resident, then realized the man was friends with hundreds of military families. The man had also offered to house enlisted military members and took them to dinner, Busch Gardens and other local activities, the warrant states.
The Marine told investigators he had been to the man’s house three times before he found an odd-looking clock on the back of the toilet, the warrant says.
A note taped to the top of the clock read “This clock was used by NASA to support the Viking Mission to Mars. Please don’t touch.” The clock was pointed at the toilet bowl and shower.
After inspecting it, the Marine saw camera lenses inside the clock. He took several pictures of the clock, the note and the direction it was pointing in to show police.
“[The Marine] became nervous about staying in the house,” the warrant states.
The Marine made an excuse not to spend the night, then went back to the military base.
“[The Marine] stated he is very concerned because numerous military men and their families and children have stayed at [the man’s] house and used the restroom and showered,” the warrant states.
The warrant says the Marine told police the man usually kept his bedroom door shut, but during one visit he saw a large computer in the bedroom.
The Marine added the man is “very computer literate.”
Investigators discovered the man’s Facebook page was “full” of images of women and men staying at his house.
With the Oct. 24 search warrant, investigators seized 53 items from the man’s household, including the NASA clock, an iPad, computer cards, several iPhones, floppy discs, laptops, computer towers, thumb drives spy cameras and more, the search warrant states.
York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shelley Ward said the incident is still under investigation.
