Amidst a nationwide opioid epidemic, a mother is slated to share the story of her own family’s battle with addiction in Williamsburg.
Author Sandra Swenson will host a book signing and reading from her collection of books on Monday at the Bruton Parish Church, according to a SpiritWorks Foundation Center for the Soul news release. Swenson is an advocate from Austin, Tx. and focuses on the acceptance, education, and recovery of addiction.
In her work, she shares her son’s struggle with addiction and how it made her more aware of the many other families sharing similar experiences the release said.
These families inspired her newest book, “Tending Dandelions.” Swenson will be reading passages from the book, which is a collection of meditations for mothers with addicted children, the release said.
The reading is free to the public and will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Bruton Parish Church on Duke of Gloucester Street. The reception and book signing will take place afterward in the Parish House at Lewis Hall, the release said.
The event is sponsored by SpiritWorks Foundation Center for the Soul, a local nonprofit founded in 2005 that focuses on helping those recovering from addiction, according to the SpiritWorks website.
The foundation has created an impact in the community by reaching out to families in need through recovery resources and events such as this, their website said.
Parking will be available for both events on Duke of Gloucester Street.
