Police identify man killed after shots fired at Toano apartment complex

Police believe a dispute between several people escalated to gunfire at the Burnt Ordinary Apartments in Toano Monday night, leaving one person dead and another injured.

Police have identified the person killed by gunfire as 20-year-old Adren Raheem Garnett, of James City County, according to a James City County Police news release.

The identity of the other person who was shot has not been released, but police said he is 18 years old and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police were called to the Burnt Ordinary Apartments around 9:23 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of gunshots in the area, the release said.

James City County Police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds in the 7900 block of Sterling Court.

Garnett was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and was later pronounced dead, the release said.

The 18-year-old, also a James City County resident, was shot in the leg and flown by helicopter to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries, the release said.

Police say both victims were involved in a dispute before shots were fired.

Police also believe more than one person fired a weapon, and “numerous” shell casings were recovered at the scene.

The back of a building at 7801 Weymouth Court and at least two vehicles were struck by bullets at the apartments, the release said.

Neither victim are residents of the Burnt Ordinary Apartments.

Police are still investigating the incident.
