Fire officials have determined that a house fire last week in York County was caused by “discarded smoking materials.”

York Fire & Life Safety Chief Stephen Kopczynski said the smoking materials, which could be a cigarette or other similar item, started the blaze in the 700 block of Schooner Boulevard Thursday night, which displaced a family and left two cats missing.

The two missing cats have been spotted near the house in the Bruton area of York County, but have not been retrieved yet, Kopczynski said.

Fire officials arrived on scene around 11 p.m. Thursday night, finding the house engulfed in flames, according to a Sept. 29 news release.

One person was treated for smoke exposure at the scene, but did not need to be transported to the hospital, the release said. There were no additional injuries to either residents or firefighters.

James City County and Williamsburg fire departments assisted in extinguishing the fire, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office was also on scene, the release said.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family.
